11/24: Next Great American Band recap #6
By: Rodney Ho | November 24, 2007, 12:51PM EST

Nobody expected Franklin Bridge to be out last week but this week’s departure of Cliff Wagner & the Old No. 7 wasn’t all that surprising, especially after last week’s languid performance. I got it right so I’m four out of six so far in my predictions. (The show finally gave the departing band time to speak though I find it odd they aren’t giving them the “Idol” video montage farewell.)

So we’re now halfway to the winner of a show hardly anybody is watching. The remaining bands are Tres Bien, Denver & the Mile High Orchestra, Sixwire, Light of Doom, the Clark Brothers and Dot Dot Dot.

Sixwire and the Clark Brothers both proved why they will likely be the final two rockin’. Sixwire’s “The Last Time” felt muscular and energetic. I missed a drumbeat on “Gimme Shelter” but the percussion-less Clark Brothers were mesmerizing nonetheless, a true musical tour de force.

Tres Bien, who did “Get Off Of My Cloud,” was okay but the band’s ’60s schick isn’t growing on me. I enjoy the big band group in general and its version of “I’m Free” wasn’t half bad, but that lead singer really is missing a little joie de vivre, that kick in the pants that would take them to the next level. But the weakest performance to date for Light of Doom may doom them for elimination as the lead singer struggled with the voclas for “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” Dot Dot Dot at the end was fun and Rose’s guitar solo hit the spot.

At this stage, order of performance still matters. Being first is bad but not the worst. Being second and third out of seven is bad news for both Denver and Light of Doom. Tres Bien performed well enough to likely escape the ax. Dot Dot Dot was in the driver’s seat. They’re definitely safe. Naturally, Sixwire and Clark Brothers are around another week, too. I think it comes down to Denver and Light of Doom for the big heave ho.

My prediction: Light of Doom will face the darkness and have to face puberty away from the TV cameras.

hey Rodney ... we're pretty much in agreement, tho i hated for Ol' No. 7 to go... frankly i ENJOY them more than i do dot dot dot, lol. at least they seem genuine!

unfortunately, i agree that LoD might just be gone this week; again, i like them more than i do 3D, but i realize that they need to grow up some more before they can be taken seriously. But Mitchell IS a drummer extraordinaire, and the guitar player has more than promise, he's downright good already. i didn't particularly think that they did well with JJFlash unfortunately, so you are probably right, they'll be the next to go.

I'm more impressed than ever with 6Wire and Clark Bros, and agree that they are the bands to beat here. But i do enjoy DMHO, and hope they end up 3rd at least. Tres Bien is indeed getting a little old, even for an old 60s-70s gal like me, lol!

hope everyone had wonderful turkey days ... see you on Monday.

Hey all. I am hoping for a Clark Brothers & Sixwire finale. I would be right there to buy a CD from either.

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. I did. I changed my look over the weekend. I will try to get a new picture up soon.

Anyway, I do miss blogging. Been a hectic couple weeks with B-Notices (tax penalty) going out. This will go into mid December before it slows down.

I will try to check in with everyone soon.

We miss you Mitch and hope you're back soon. Idol is less than 2 months away!!!!!

Still have company so I haven't seen anything but football in the last 3 days! Thanks for letting me know what happened on Great American Band!

why is everyone saying Light of Doom is horrible. just because they're kids, doesn't mean they're bad. I personaly think that tres bein is the worst band there. the lead singer is pretty horrible.

No one said LoD is horrible, Rachel.... we said that their performance THIS week was not as good as previous performances, and at this level of competition, that's critical. I disagree that Tres Bien is "horrible" ... they're "retro" and if you are into the kind of music that LoD performs, you probably don't like a lot of the music of the 60s.... no shame in that, except that i personally think you miss a lot, LOL. Light of Doom IS young.... they DO have room to grow...and i personally think that they WILL grow and become quite a good, sellable, marketable, and FUN band over the years... they are very well on their way to that now. But read more carefully, hon, no one said they were "horrible" ... in fact, if you read my previous post, you will see that i specifically complimented two of the members on sheer talent already (all said with a smile... and a compliment to you that you used the proper pronoun-contraction instead of falling into the "their" "there" trap!!!! keep up the good work! and that's not sarcastic at all, by the way.... and if you listen, Resnik and Sheila didn't say that LoD was horrible either! Even Dicko has complimented them!!!!

having responded, knowing it may never be read by the rachel, i'll say good night till the morrow!!!... OOPS wait! it IS "tomorrow" already, does that make me "first" on Monday?"??? huh huh? does it??? do i get a cookie, huh, do i?

PS Go My Bucs!!! Sorry Mitch 'bout the Panthers :-(

Hey everybody! Hope everyone had a Happy Happy. We had tons of great food and 5 babies to play with, so it was a good time.
I think the themes have been a bad idea. This is not the Next Great Cover Band. They should be judged on their own sound. I am still rooting for the Clark Brothers. I was flipping channels and caught Denver and the Mile High on TBN, singing 'bout Hey-zeus.

Good Morning.. Does anyone know why all the NFL quarterbacks have a green dot on the back of their helmets? I can't wait for the Green Bay-Dallas show down Thursday night. I gotta pull for Favre and the Packers.

New blog entry forthcoming featuring Mandisa and George Huff dueting "The Christmas Song" and Bo Bice's new "Witness" video.

Why does it always seem that the singer for Tres Bien is out of breath? I am so not impressed with that band and would love to see them go.
Denver, however, might be the next to get the axe, IMHO. This guy just does not have the pipes to front that band.
Light of Doom is ok, for what they are. But their singer is the least talented of those kids.

It's time for Originals!!! Cover bands are a dime a dozen. I looked and bought Dot Dot Dots CD. Couldn't find anything by Sixwire and the Clark Brothers are with more of the family not just the 3. I was all for 6wire until I got this CD. Every song on it is great and could be a single. The last song you hear on it you'll be singing no matter which of the 8 songs. DoTx3 can deliver the originals!!!

Well I personally know dot dot dot and they are really a genuine band and they are very nice and would do anything for anyone. I think all the bands are pretty good and I must give them credit because I could not get up in front of millions of people and do what they do. So the next time you knock a band , you all need to think twice I dont see you up there trying this.
