10/27: Next Great American Band #2 recap
By: Rodney Ho | October 27, 2007, 1:53AM EST

Close that hatch. Yes, the Hatch are goners. After watching the 12 finalists do Bob Dyland covers and originals, the Hatch is the easiest one to nix. First of all, the band’s original song was horrendously hookless and the lead singer lacks any real charisma or vocal talent. Plus the band came up second and that’s one of the worst spots to be in, especially for a two-hour show when viewership is extremely low at 8:10 p.m. (as opposed to just offensively poor by 9:50 p.m.)

But “The Next Great American Band” has to get rid of the two lowest vote getters. So after the Hatch, there are a few more candidates. Any band that goes first is vulnerable and that places Denver & the Mile High Orchestra in the crosshairs. Although the lead singer lacks edge and swagger, the group is distinctive enough to make it to week two. The Likes of You, though, are probably the most vulnerable to go because they were hardly seen week one and failed to excel week two though I do like the lead singer, even with the excessive falsetto.

I enjoyed Tres Bien, but the band is really retro 60s and its songs may not resonate at all with a broad enough audience. I’m also worried for Cliff Wagner & the Old #7 simply because the lead singer doesn’t have charismatic good looks and they play bluegrass.

Rocket are like a poor man’s Donnas. Tight band but the vocalist lacks the grit and skill to really make it work. I think the fact they are the only female band around might keep them around an extra week.

The other six bands, I think, are definitely safe. The 12 year olds Light of Doom can definitely rock and the only criticism the judges could come up with is the discomfort of seeing two of them shirtless.

The Muggs are also extremely tight (though this type of Detroit rock isn’t exactly modern) while Dot Dot Dot are oddly entertaining but deeply cheeseball in that Fall Out Boy sort of way. Nonetheless, I think they will cruise through despite harsh critiques from the judges.

Finally, the three standouts are Sixwire, the country band which already has a couple of top 40 country hits under its belt; Franklin Bridge, the black dudes who can funk it out with real energy; and my favorite, the Clark Brothers, three incredibly skilled brothers who performed this amazing original song “Billy the Kid.”

Next Friday: the theme is Elton John and Bernie Taupin songs. They will call up bands and two won’t get called. Those are the ones who are eliminated.

I'm first. I'm first. Guess there's not much too much competition at 2:15 in the am. New med causing insomnia. First time I've been on in weeks and just got somewhat caught up. Nice to know some things stay the same when chaos reigns all around you. Got laid off, no workey for me for a little while. Thinking of going back to skool (I mean school). It was nice being mentioned yesterday (even if I was being accused of being a MPD). I'll try harder to stay in contact. Missed you guys.

Rodney: your comments about NGAB are right on!!! The top 3 will definitely be those you named, unless america is just absolutely NUTS. the girlband would be better if the lead singer didn't feel she had to pose and toss her head to the side like she does, imho, lol...it's REALLY distracting!!! for true musicianship in a band setting, the three you named are at the top, along with the bluegrass group...but as you said, the "sex appeal" of the bluegrass band is lacking. I also REALLY enjoy the big band sound, but don't think they'll garner enough votes to stay for the whole thing... although with the rise in popularity of ballroom dancing, a la DTWS, there IS a revival in interest in the big-band sound to some extent.

i'm with you 100% on tres bien.... i love them, but i'm a 60s-70s music junky anyway, lol!!!

Even tho' (gasp) i'm not much of a dawg fan, i have to say i am actually proud of their performance, and i LOVE the deliberate penalty for "attitude".... i think it did what it was intended to do for the boy-dawgs.

ok....i'm back outa here, see you guys monday!

OTS, glad you're still out there... HANG in there on the job thing.... i went through that in 04, for a complete year, then again for 6 weeks at the end of 05....but now i have a wonderful (albeit not the greatest pay, it's CLOSE to home for the first time in years).... keep the feelers out, do the school thing if you can, and hang in there, you CAN do it!!! if i can do it in my late 50s and still find a good job, i know you can!!!

Posted by: mynana on October 29, 2007 8:08AM EST
Morning everyone! Wow Red Sox really wanted that series, and they got it, with brooms in hand. Think A-Road will end up in Boston now? If the team is smart, they'll say no.

Was it just me, or did everyone else think the England game was boring!

Posted by: YoDaddy on October 29, 2007 8:45AM EST
I agree with Rodney's top 3. I also really like the big band. Franklin Bridge is the best musically, I just don't know if their jazz fusion sound will get the votes. The little boys can go home now; the adults are playing. I am rooting for the Clark Brothers all the way.
Good morning everyone.

Posted by: YoDaddy on October 29, 2007 8:57AM EST
Weird dream last night. I went out visit my friend Ken, who lives way out in the country. When I got there he said that two friends were stopping by. The first one to stop by was the blawg's own Deirdre. She came by to pick up some software for her computer. The second was shay. She came by to borrow laundry detergent. We were all amazed that we all had a connection. After she left I asked Ken why shay had come all the way out to the country to borrow detergent. He said that she needed to speak with him in private and the detergent was just a story so she could be alone with him for a minute. WTF? I think the meds give me weird dreams. I have a lot of them.

Posted by: shay on October 29, 2007 8:57AM EST
Morning guys! Ara, don't get cursed out this early a.m. :-)

Posted by: Jex on October 29, 2007 8:59AM EST
Good Morning Everyone!

I don’t watch the show, but I’m all for anything that promotes real music as opposed to these studio boy bands and such.

And to all of you who doubted the Dawgs – Nah nah nah boo boo!

Sorry shay :-\

Posted by: mynana on October 29, 2007 9:00AM EST
Yo - you told the dream, now it won't happen!

Hey Shay, what's up girl.

Posted by: shay on October 29, 2007 9:04AM EST
Hey nana! Nothing going on.

Hey Jexy Poo. How was your weekend?

Posted by: Jex on October 29, 2007 9:04AM EST
Yo, that's shay's modus operandi. She always visits under some other made up pretense. WATCH her!

Posted by: mynana on October 29, 2007 9:08AM EST
No much Shay - did a little sluething, but other than that, quiet. No Boys on the tube. How was yours.

Hey Jex.

Posted by: shay on October 29, 2007 9:09AM EST
Yo, was I looking cute? A sista can't be doing laundry in her daisy dukes looking a hot mess.

Posted by: kellyfan on October 29, 2007 9:10AM EST
Morning all!

Nana, A-Road? LOL! Hope he doesn't end up in Boston...they have enough keeping up with Drew and Manny. ;) It was alright that the Sox won, but I expected a little more out of the Rockies.

Posted by: shay on October 29, 2007 9:10AM EST
My weekend was ok. I managed to do laundry all day yesterday. Thank God I got that extra Gain detergent from Yo's friend because it cost alot these days.

Posted by: YoDaddy on October 29, 2007 9:27AM EST
Shay - you looked like you just came from work. Very professional. And it WAS Gain that you borrowed.

Posted by: shay on October 29, 2007 9:29AM EST
That is too funny! I'm psychic. Send me your birthday and I will tell you your reading for the month of November. LOL!!

Posted by: linnykat on October 29, 2007 9:29AM EST

Good mornin blawgpound!!

Posted by: Mitch on October 29, 2007 9:42AM EST
Hey all, sneaking in a post here. I agree Sixwire & Clark Brothers were the two best on BGAB. The lead singer for Sixwire is Andy Childs. He wrote the big country hit "Your Love Amazes Me" that was recorded by John Berry (forgive me if I already posted that). His son also auditioned in pop/Christian music but did not make it.

The Clark Brothers have also been on the Country Charts as The Clark Family Experience. For those that listen to country, you may remember their hit "Meanwhile Back At The Ranch".

Anyway, I will try to sneak in again later.

Posted by: linnykat on October 29, 2007 9:45AM EST
Mitch, isn't the "family experience" more of the family than just the bros who are in NGAB???

Posted by: mynana on October 29, 2007 9:45AM EST
Well, I see the Virus that invaded the blog is gone.
Kimmy, I agree, game was boring, but having lunch with brother in care center and he was watching, so I couldn't turn it off. Snoooozzzzzz.

Posted by: YoDaddy on October 29, 2007 9:45AM EST
mitch - I loved the Clark Family Experience. I always wondered what happened to them.

Posted by: ontheside on October 29, 2007 9:46AM EST
OK Shay let's test your crystal ball. December 23. Tell me you see good health, happiness and lots and lots of money. (lie if you have to LOL)

Posted by: on October 29, 2007 9:46AM EST
funny, I never thougt Linny was dangerous....hmmm.

Hey OTS and Mitchy!!!

I only use Gain...I love the smell!

Posted by: linnykat on October 29, 2007 9:47AM EST
Yo, i guess mitch already ducked out.... but am i right about the CFE? i thought it was more of the family. just askin' :-)

Posted by: linnykat on October 29, 2007 9:48AM EST
LOLOL!!! never know Kimmie....neverrrrrrr know! i found an old pic of myself i think i'm gonna put on my photos page, just so you folks will think i'm a young saxy sorta gal..... *snicker*

Posted by: shay on October 29, 2007 9:51AM EST
OTS, play lotto numbers, 36, 24, 36, your day and month of your burff day.

That should take care of the money problems.

Posted by: YoDaddy on October 29, 2007 9:52AM EST
Yeah, linny CFE was the entire family. I think there were 5 or 6 brothers and a sister or two. All the boys had names that started with "A".

Posted by: mynana on October 29, 2007 9:54AM EST
Just heard Jennie Garth (DWTS) almost went out to dance without her underwear! Pulling a Britney is she? What would the camera have done then - live shot and all.

Posted by: ontheside on October 29, 2007 9:54AM EST
Will do Shay. Can you lend me a buck?

Posted by: shay on October 29, 2007 9:54AM EST
Go ahead and post it Linny

Posted by: shay on October 29, 2007 9:55AM EST
Dayum OTS, I gave you the #'s. I have to sponsor you too??

Posted by: linnykat on October 29, 2007 9:57AM EST
that's what i thought.... they're mighty good!!! (both the family and the bros)... but i enjoyed Franklin Bridge, SixWire, Muggs and the big band a lot too.... i wish i had a time-telescope so i could see what that little guitar player will be doing in 10 years from the 6th grade band....if he doesn't get into drugs and crap he will be one helluva guitar player when he's matured, he's already pretty good. and i think the lead vocals guy has a good chance of being big time if his voice doesn't crap out on him when it 'changes' ...

ok, gotta lotta work to do, see you guys later!!!

Posted by: ontheside on October 29, 2007 9:58AM EST
I was always told "Never gamble with a 'scared' dollar".

Posted by: mynana on October 29, 2007 10:31AM EST

Posted by: on October 29, 2007 10:40AM EST
Good morning Everyone, weel almost everyone... lol
I was sick as a dog this weekend. Took my car to Sears Sat to get a tire rotation, while there, I ventured off to the food court, (yeah I know I am greedy) ate pizza, My first clue should have been Mexicans making Pizza????? (not saying it cant happen) and I love me some mexican food, but dayum! Got so sick, was Earling all night. Sunday, earled all day. Today, my insides are so sore. (is this tmi?) I am here though.

Posted by: mynana on October 29, 2007 10:41AM EST

Posted by: shay on October 29, 2007 10:44AM EST
mynana, he is calling us young folk whippersnappers.

Posted by: linnykat on October 29, 2007 10:44AM EST
lol nana, you're prolly one of "us" .... whippersnappers would be these young buccaroos and buccarettes to whom the 60s are but a history lesson!!!!

well, at least, that's how *i* see it!!! (my oldest child was born in 1970, so that qualifies as the dividing line for me)

Posted by: 1CHOCL8T on October 29, 2007 10:46AM EST
OH MY! What in the world did I just walk into this morning? No underwear on corpses, Shaun and his gastro-fiasco and somebody needing bail money!! GOOD LAWD!!

Good morning! Kimmy, the dead will wear whatever the family brings to the funeral home.

Posted by: linnykat on October 29, 2007 10:46AM EST

Posted by: mynana on October 29, 2007 10:51AM EST
Oh, when I was young, we called really "old" people whippersnappers. Just making sure I'm not in the really "old" category. My two were born in 75 and 77. I told you, I'm a young nana.

Posted by: shay on October 29, 2007 10:53AM EST
Everyone under the age of 50 is a young whippersnapper. Everyone 50 and older is just "old", I mean "older". Hee hee!

Shay, ya' stupid!

Posted by: KPH on October 29, 2007 10:54AM EST
A young boy comes down for breakfast. Since they live on
a farm, his mother asks if he has done his chores.

"Not yet," said the little boy.

His mother tells him no breakfast until he does his chores.

Well, he's a little ticked off so when he feeds the chickens he kicks a chicken. When he feeds the cows, he kicks a cow.

When he feeds the pigs, he kicks a pig.

He goes back in for breakfast and his mother
gives him a bowl of dry cereal.

"How come I don't get any eggs and bacon,
and why don't I have any milk in my cereal?" he asks.

"Well," his mother says, "I saw you kick a chicken,
so you don't get any eggs for a week.

I saw you kick the pig, so you don't get any bacon for
a week either.

I saw you kick the cow so for a week
you aren't getting any milk."

Just then, his father comes down for breakfast and
kicks the cat halfway across the kitchen.

The little boy looks up at his mother with a smile, then say's are you going to tell him or should I!

Posted by: Jex on October 29, 2007 10:54AM EST

Posted by: shay on October 29, 2007 11:03AM EST
A girl that lays there while you take her fish is definitely a stripper..... or a whore! Whichever is more politically correct.
