10/22: Kellie Pickler at Philips
By: Rodney Ho | October 22, 2007, 9:00AM EST

I checked in Friday evening for Kellie Pickler’s opening set at the Rascal Flatts concert at Philips Arena just to see how she’s matured and improved on stage over the past year.

She sounded a little raspier than normal. Her voice lacks the depth of Carrie Underwood but it still provides plenty of texture and warmth. Plus, she still has charm in spades. Though much of what she said during the show sounded like stuff she spouts every concert, she did crack at one point, “I forgot to brush my teeth. Nobody should get too close to me!”

I sat about 50 feet away and with no video cameras offering closeups, I couldn’t get a take on her makeup. But from my distance, she looked good. She had a blond bob she’s worn for awhile now, a pink tank top that showed off her new pups without being tawdry, tight blue jeans and those signature red high heels.

Her seven-song set included six cuts from her “Small Town Girl” CD and one new song. (No covers!)

1- “Gotta Keep Moving”

2- “The Best Day of Your Life” - This is a song she and Taylor Swift co-wrote while touring with Brad Paisley over the summer. She said it was targeted at past bad boyfriends whose lives will only go downhill after breaking it off with her. It’s actually a pretty good tune.

3- “Things That Never Cross a Man’s Mind” - This is her third single off her CD and it was spun 11 times last week on Kicks. It’s got that honky-tonk flavor and should have no problem becoming her third top 30 hit. Kellie does lack that edgy grime that Gretchen Wilson could shellack on this tune and give it an extra kick. But it’s a solid song.

4- “Didn’t Know How Much I Loved You” - She said this is her favorite cut off her album. It’s a decent ballad.

5- “Small Town Girl” - This was the first song she ever wrote about Albermarle, N.C.

6- “I Wonder” - A truly touching tune about her estranged relationship with her mom that still works after multiple hearings.

7- “Red High Heels” -The song that kickstarted her CD a year ago and gave her her first top 15 hit on the country charts.

Amazingly, Kellie is the third-best selling artist so far from season five. Here are the eight finalists who have released CDs and their sales.

1- Daughtry 3.19 million - His third single is chugging along to another top 10 so I expect sales to easily exceed 3.5 million by year’s end.

2- Taylor 696K This one is going to strugle even to hit 700K at this point.

3- Kellie 637K - If that third single becomes even a modest hit, she has a chance to exceed Taylor’s total.

4- Elliott 422K His second single is “One Word.” “Wait For You” was a big surprise hit and we’ll see if he can strike gold again. He just received a “gold” designation, which means 500K delivered.

5- Kat 358K I get the impression no more singles are forthcoming on this CD so she’s not going to get much more in sales.

6- Bucky 285K He has a second single “It’s Good To Be Us” out after his first one “A Different World” made it to the top 10.

7- Mandisa 53K

8- Paris 20K

These are all Nielsen Soundscan sales estimates. The total sales for all eight season five finalists are 5.66 million, a majority from Daughtry alone.

Kellie has the personality to keep the fame going for awhile. Her voice is fine...nothing all that special, but she's cute and funny and there are a lot of people who've done very well for themselves with those two attributes! And I'm referring to the 'cute and funny' attributes, not her other two attributes.:-)

Posted by: mynana on October 21, 2007 5:59PM EST
Thanks for the comments Rodney, I think they will eventually test (if they haven't already) Kellie for a comedy sitcom. She'd probably do well, if she has good comedic timing. Will be interesting to see what develops for her in the future.

Kellie has a great voice! I believe she was sick at this concert. Had to go to the doctor to get meds, so she could even perform that night.. That is why her voice sounded like that.

yes, she is hilarious, very charming, she WILL be around for years to come!

YALL OH ME A COOKIE FOR SATURDAY MORNINGS BLOG GUYS!!!GO DAWGS!!!!

Posted by: mynana on October 22, 2007 6:50AM EST
Good morning pounders. Cold, rainy day in Big D. Fall is here this week, at least. I'm giving you a link to a soldier's account of his time in Iraq for the war. He's from Frisco, Texas. If you have time, it's interesting reading. Start with his 2006 entries and go from there. Here's the link: http://armyofdude.blogspot.com/

Hope all have a great day.

Posted by: RC on October 22, 2007 7:47AM EST
Mornin Nana....that rain extends here I guess? Well at least it's raining here too in ATL!!

Posted by: Luvstoread on October 22, 2007 8:01AM EST
Hope everyone had a great weekend!! Howdy Nana and RC...
Well, your boys pulled one out yesterday. I don't even want to talk about our sorry team. When you are losing and you have a little over two minutes to the end of the game, why do you punt on 4th down? What did you have to lose. RC... Think Petrino maybe gone after the season?

Posted by: Luvstoread on October 22, 2007 8:03AM EST
oops..may be two words...

Posted by: RC on October 22, 2007 8:11AM EST
Mornin LUVS....

Nah, I think they'll give Bobby a couple or 3 seasons considering how the year started.....The O-line is the biggest problem I see.....

Posted by: shay on October 22, 2007 8:18AM EST
Morning D, Luvs, RC and mynana. I will be in and out today. I have work to catch up on. But you know my email address if you need me :-)

Posted by: YoDaddy on October 22, 2007 8:20AM EST
Mornin' Blawgerians! We just got e mail that a kid out our school has that MRSA staph infection. Just what I need. Washing my hands as we speak....

Posted by: Mitch on October 22, 2007 8:31AM EST
Good Morning All!! That MRSA virus has been extremely bad in the Charlotte Metro area. They said the best way to keep from getting it is to wash your hands frequently and use the hand sanitizer.

Posted by: YoDaddy on October 22, 2007 8:33AM EST
I'll be doing a Silkwood type scrub down every night for a while.

Posted by: RC on October 22, 2007 8:39AM EST
MRSA.....brain eating Amoeba......lots of bad things around today. Med community blames over prescibing antibiotics as part of the problem.....wonder (serioulsy) if global warming has anything to do with it?

Ok, Ok....I'll go back to my corner now.....

Posted by: mynana on October 22, 2007 8:39AM EST
Morning again. Yea, Luvs, Boys won, but I was not happy with the beginning. Hopefuly the bye week will work on some things needed to work on - defense for one. Mitch, what did you think of B&S last night?

Posted by: Luvstoread on October 22, 2007 8:39AM EST
Morning Shay, Yo, and Mitch..
RC... You are probably right; however, I don't see him staying after next year if they have another losing season. Right now I think it would be in our best interest to lose so we can get a better draft pick. Our number one priority should be a quarterback!! BTW.. If you want some good wings, Taco Mac's are really yummy!! ;-)

Posted by: Luvstoread on October 22, 2007 8:41AM EST
Mitch and Nana...
Please no details on Brothers and Sisters. I have not watched it yet. It's one of my favorites. Thanks...

Posted by: RC on October 22, 2007 8:43AM EST
Nana....Boys problems are minor relatively speaking.....just imagine how you'd feel as a Falcon fan!!!

Posted by: RC on October 22, 2007 8:44AM EST
LUVS,

I agree....I think Bobby will go after the Louisville QB in the draft.

Posted by: mynana on October 22, 2007 8:45AM EST
RC, I feel your pain. Wasn't long ago we were in your position. Remember, they kept hiring all the "oldies" for QB and Romo was on the sidelines?

Okay. Luvs, not talk about B&S.

Posted by: flat screen on October 22, 2007 8:47AM EST
GOOD MORNING ALL!!!HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS DOMINATES AGIAN BABY!!!5 WAY TIE IN THE SEC EAST!!!!GO DAWGS BEAT THE GATORS!!!!!!WOOO HOOOOOOO!!!!I NEED MY COOKIE FOR SATURDAY!!!!

Posted by: RC on October 22, 2007 8:47AM EST
Right Nana....looks like we shoulda signed Vinny T before Carolina did!!! :-)

Is Bernie Kosar still available?

Perfect day for pot of stew slow cooking in crock pot. My Dad's way of fixing with tomato soup for broth.

TOM BRADY..6 TD PASSES!!!!!!!GO PATRIOTS!!!

Posted by: Deirdre on October 22, 2007 9:10AM EST
Morning...RC...my kid Greg said the same thing yesterday about Petrino going after the Louisville QB.

I'm enjoying this rain...can't say my dogs are too happy but they have a good shelter.

We had the stew last night nana, cuz it was cold when we got up yesterday morning. Enjoy!

Posted by: mynana on October 22, 2007 9:13AM EST
Happily off to car pool today. Be back in a bit.

Posted by: Carla on October 22, 2007 9:14AM EST
Morning everyone! Luvs, I have no idea why Petrino punted on 4th down. It was the dumbest move of the game tied with Brooking tackling his teammate allowing Bush to get in the end zone. WTF??? They had the game won and then let it slip away.

Posted by: on October 22, 2007 9:17AM EST
Morning All!

I was screaming at the TV yesterday! Punting on 4th down, are you kidding me? Fire his azz after this season if he keeps it up. But all the flaws are showing since Vick is gone. The Cowboys did alright, at least T.O. didn't drop any balls but, just for the record....I hate the Patriots.

I'll be in and out today too. It's getting cooler here and boss is in the office more :-(

Posted by: Mitch on October 22, 2007 9:23AM EST
RC, the powers that be over Carolina say they will probably start Carr instead of Testaverde Sunday against the Colts.

Posted by: flat screen on October 22, 2007 9:25AM EST
24!!!!!!!....48!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Luvstoread on October 22, 2007 9:26AM EST
Can we start a petition now to the Falcon higher ups...
Quarterback needed!! Anyway, off to a staff meeting...
Y'all be good... ;-)

Posted by: Jex on October 22, 2007 9:26AM EST
Good Morning Everyone! I'm glad to see the rain in ATL, but I think it's because the heavens are crying for the Dirty Birds. :-(

Posted by: linnykat on October 22, 2007 9:28AM EST
Morning blawgpounders....hope your weekend was lovely!

Rodney -- because not much on prev. blog re GAB, i'll say it here...i thoroughly enjoyed the show, enjoyed the relative lack of garbage, and some of the bands were really quite good. While metal is not my "thing" i was glad the 12-year-olds at least made it through...that one kid can freaking PLAY the guitar!!!! And I felt SOOOO bad for that one guy, the only one given a second chance, and the band just could NOT keep up with his vocals... maybe he should go try out for AI alone! he was sorta daughtry-esque but not exactly...

and i cannot remember the names of the groups, but that black group was goooooood! and the big-band crew was pretty good too... not terribly impressed with the girl-group, but it will be interesting to see if they rise to the challenge...

If anyone is interested in a small book of poems written by linny-kat's hubby, please email thru the blog or if you already have my email, that way, and i'll send details. not to be crassly commercial and all, just if you're interested, let me know!

time to work...see you guys later!

Posted by: mynana on October 22, 2007 9:47AM EST
Did the Pats play first stringers the entire game against the winless Dolphins? I was happy to see Wade Phillips had class yesterday, and did not run up the score on the Vikings, when he could have - as a certain piece of sh..... coach for a certain NE team did last week.

Oh yea, I forgot to ask. If anyone would like to help support my little guys "Walk for Wishes" on November 10th, let me know and I'll send the website for sponsors. This is 2nd year to walk in support of other children getting wishes granted by Make A Wish, as he did 4 years ago. Thanks.

Eve, yes I saw Tyler Perry and wife were the closest to us, my wife actually looks like the lady who played his wife, but they had some serious secrets.... We talked about the movie afterward, and we both agreed that out of all the couples, we were most like them, not in all ways, but alot. My wife works alot and carries her blackberry everywhere.

Posted by: Carla on October 22, 2007 10:19AM EST

don't know Carla.....I just saw the headline where this mornin where they are evacuating and have opened QualCom stadium for evacuees.

Posted by: mynana on October 22, 2007 10:46AM EST
Yes, Carla, they did say downed power line. Pepperdine was evacuated. Have been through hurricanes, tornados and the Quake in SF I think Fire is scarier.

Posted by: Deirdre on October 22, 2007 10:48AM EST
Greg's been smelling the smoke from the Malibu fire. He said the winds aren't bad where he lives but they're really ripping around the canyons. He has to go through a canyon to get to work. The fires aren't close to him.

Posted by: Eve07 on October 22, 2007 10:54AM EST
Shaun I saw myself/hubby as more the Janet/Malik characters, always the moderator between friends. My hubby was simlar to Tyler's character a little too but not as needy. I have my Angela days too, but I'm not half as "hood" as she was, lol.

Posted by: mynana on October 22, 2007 10:54AM EST
That's good D.

morning everyone.

Posted by: mynana on October 22, 2007 11:09AM EST
I grew up in Beaumont when Carla hit down there. I lived 1/2 mile from a tornado that came through Garland. And I was on BART, the commuter train, under ground, waiting to go home after work in SF when the quake hit. It was our first year there. I wasn't scared, until they told us we had to leave the station because they needed to check the transbay tube for leaks, then I got a little nervous not wanting a rush of water to get me. You never saw a person get up those stairs so fast! I had to stay in the City for the night with a co-worker. We watched her TV on batteries until they died. I got to get home that morning. It was safer for no one to drive into the city to get me. I remember a lady walking down the street with her "hooch" in her brown bag saying "if I'm going, I'm going drunk". Humor for the time.

Kimmy it looked like paradise in those pics you showed us. I have to REALLY work on my fear of flying.

Eve, Tasha Smith always plays the loud roles, but she is a good actress. This is the best i have ever seen her, she looked terrific! All the ladies were georgous, the men were cast wrong, JMO.

Posted by: Luvstoread on October 22, 2007 12:25PM EST
Eve,
Yep, it will be a little expensive to say the least.
Kimmy... Do you two need an assistant? ;-)...

Thought this was a interesting test about the 2008 candidates for President.

http://www.wqad.com/Global/link.asp?L=259460

Pretty much told me what I already knew. I am die hard Democrat.

Posted by: on October 22, 2007 12:29PM EST
Eve...girl, if I can do it so can you. I don't like flying at all but a little sippy sip before hand and it's all good. I prayed that if I was going to die in a plane crash if he could please let it happen on the way back...I would love to renew my vows there too but, once we got there, we didn't need an official ceremony to renew our vows, it was so incredibly romantic on every level....

did it make you wanna get hitched House?

Posted by: on October 22, 2007 12:41PM EST
it's not as bad as you think Luvs...that's why we figured every 2-3 years. it's worth every penny;-)

that link confirmed what i already knew too! those elephants were at the bottom of the page for me!

Posted by: Deirdre on October 22, 2007 12:45PM EST
Perdue asked for a state of emergency so the gov't could by-pass regulations and order the Army Corp of Engineers to stop releasing water from Lake Lanier. Seems like a smart move to me.

Posted by: Luvstoread on October 22, 2007 12:47PM EST
D...
Yep, is it too little too late though. ;-(.. Oh well, lunch time. Any suggestions?

Posted by: Deirdre on October 22, 2007 12:50PM EST
Have y'all ever tried Kozy Shack Rice Pudding. It comes in little 100 calorie serving sized containers. I just had one, it was delicious!

Posted by: on October 22, 2007 12:56PM EST
I've never had that, D. I have only liked my late grandmother's rice pudding tho.

I'm a chocolate puddin' girl, myself:-)

I've never been big on rice pudding but this is very good...they even have a sugar free version but I haven't tried that...I get headaches with nutrasweet..
