A motorcyclist was hit and killed trying to avoid an accident in Snellville, police said.

A motorcyclist was hit and killed trying to avoid an accident in Gwinnett County, according to police.

The crash killed Peter Castro, 35, of Cumming, just before 11:20 p.m. Monday on Scenic Highway near Dogwood Road, Snellville police Chief Roy Whitehead said.

Castro was heading north when a 2010 Toyota Camry driven by Caroline Atkins, 47, of Snellville, made a left turn in front of him and into a QuikTrip parking lot, Whitehead said.

The turn caused Castro to lose control of his motorcycle and he was thrown from the bike, according to a crash report.

That’s when a 2015 Toyota driven by Jamal Kemp, 22, of Lawrenceville, hit Castro while he was “laying in the roadway,” according to the report.

Castro was pronounced dead at the scene, Whitehead said. No other injuries were reported.

“The investigation is continuing pending a decision on whether charges are warranted,” Whitehead said.
