Interview: Actor Rob Kazinsky is hooked on ‘World of Warcraft’

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has brought Legendary Entertainment’s “Warcraft” movie to 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD. The movie is based on Blizzard Entertainment’s popular massively multiplayer online (MMO) game, “World of Warcraft.”

Select copies of the Blu-ray and DVD include a digital code for Blizzard’s “World of Warcraft,” as well as all expansions through “Warlords of Draenor,” and 30 days of game time for new players. In addition, gamers receive a Medivh Hero in Blizzard’s “Hearthstone” strategy card game and a Gul’dan Hero in Blizzard’s online team brawler, “Heroes of the Storm.”

Actor Rob Kazinsky, who stars as orc Orgrim Doomhammer in the film, said this type of giveaway rewards fans who have supported the big screen adaptation. Kazinsky is the most die-hard gamer in the cast of “Warcraft,” although director Duncan Jones logged many hours playing the online game. Kazinsky has played every character class in the game over the past decade.

“My main class since ‘Wrath of the Lich King’ has been Death Knight,” Kazinsky said. “I started with the Warrior and then rolled to Death Knight and then Paladin, Mage, and eventually over the years I got everything up to level 90 and cleared every heroic mode, and have done everything you could possibly do in the game.”

Kazinsky has been playing “World of Warcraft” with the same guild for 13 years and he even spends time on the official forum board. In all, Kazinsky calculates he’s spent more than 500 days playing the game with his friends.

The ranking system, World of Logs, tracks every boss kill and everything that happens in the game. Kazinsky said that for the entirety of the “Wrath of Lich King” expansion he stayed in the Top 10 of his class.

“I used to play about 18 hours a day, and there is not really anything about the game I don’t know,” Kazinsky said.

He plays on his PC when he’s not acting in movies like “Pacific Rim” and TV shows like “True Blood.” That means he needed no explanation when stepping into the performance capture booth to bring the orc to life through the magic of Industrial Light and Magic.

“Orgrim Doomhammer is the right-hand man, best friend and life-long companion of Durotan, who’s the chief of the Frostwolf Tribe,” Kazinsky said. “Durotan is the wildest orc and Orgrim is the strongest orc. I’m his big, dumb, lovable best friend who stands behind him and goes ‘yeah’ a lot. (Laughing.) Over the course of the film, Orgrim’s decisions impact the future of the Frostwolf and the rest of horde as well. It’s no secret that the biggest city in the game is called Orgrimmar, which is named after my character. So Orgrim has some choice moments in the movie which affects the person he becomes and impacts who everybody else becomes too.”

Kazinsky is hopeful that after “Warcraft” made nearly a half billion at the international box office that Duncan and the cast will be able to complete the trilogy. Strong sales of the home video release won’t hurt.

“If you know the game, you know where we’re headed,” Kazinsky said. “There is a storyline to follow, and my character just gets better and better. We started with the foundation in this film. Do the stories get better? Yes, they do. And I think the story tells the future of Kil’jaeden , Illidan, Arthas and even the Defias Brotherhood. It lays a scope and possibility for us to start working on a universe. We could have a TV show spin-off just following the Defias Brotherhood. We could have major movies. The story and lore was there in the game.”
