Emory among colleges in federal sex assault investigations

Emory University is among the colleges and universities under investigation by the U.S. Department of Education for their handling of sexual abuse complaints.

The university issued a statement Thursday saying that it “has been cooperating fully” with the investigation.

“This compliance review, which has been pending since December 2013, was not initiated in response to any complaint, but rather, is part of the agency’s Title IX compliance and enforcement function,” Emory said.

The review, Emory said, “also involves a review of other university efforts, including sexual assault prevention, outreach, support, and education programs, that are in place to address and reduce the incidents of sexual assault.”

In December, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Emory had 26 reported forcible sex offenses in 2012, up from 12 the previous year. None of those cases had been prosecuted at the time of the article.
