Edouard Roger-Vasselin is on quite the roll in doubles play.
He and partner Igor Sijsling advanced to the finals of the doubles bracket of the BB&T Atlanta Open on Saturday with a 3-6, 6-1, 10-7 victory over the Israeli duo of Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram. Roger-Vasselin and Sijsling will play Sunday the Great Britain duo of Colin Fleming and Jonathan Marray, who defeated the Australian duo of Chris Guccione and Lleyton Hewitt 6-4, 7-6 (6).
Roger-Vasselin and Sijsling are seeking their first doubles title together. They reached the finals last week in Bogota, Colombia, where they were beaten by Purav Raja and Divij Sharan.
Roger-Vasselin teamed with fellow French player Nicolas Mahut to win the doubles title in Newport, R.I., two weeks ago. It was their fourth doubles title.
Playing with Rohan Bapanna, Roger-Vasselin also reached the semifinals of the doubles bracket in Wimbledon. They were beaten by Bob and Mike Bryan.
Attendance: Attendance through Friday for this year’s Atlanta Open trails last year’s total for the same time frame by 1,097.
There are several factors that have affected this year’s attendance: the loss of the Bryan brothers, the world’s No. 1-ranked doubles team who pulled out July 20; the rain, which has affected walk-up sales, though it also rained during last year’s tournament; and increased ticket prices.
Last year’s attendance totaled 33,155, according to tournament organizers. Through Friday, 21,780 tickets were used.
Stadium changes: This year’s stadium may look like last year’s, but it’s not the same.
This year’s stadium is modular and is designed by NUSSLI, based in Switzerland. It arrived by UPS in sections and it took 3 1/2 weeks to put together. It will be broken down, packed up and then reinstalled in Winston-Salem, N.C., for the ATP event that will begin Aug. 18.
The stadium seats 3,728 people, 116 more than last year’s capacity. The new stadium features several amenities, including seats with backs for every spectator.
Sunday schedule: The singles final will begin at 3 p.m. The doubles final will begin after the conclusion of the singles match.
