Lewis’ comments sound like sour grapes

There is not anyone alive in Georgia that does not have an appreciation for John Lewis … however, his comments regarding the legitimacy of President-elect Trump smack of pure partisanship. The news media in this country continue to push this false narrative that somehow the evil Russians impacted the election and gave the election to Trump and the Democrats are following suit. It is time for the Democrats and the mainstream media to realize that Trump won, so let’s move on to do what is right and best for the nation as a whole. This sour grapes attitude is beneath Lewis … or is it?

Race relations take two steps back

If Dr. King were alive today, he would be disheartened, but not surprised, by the latest turn in U.S. race relations.

Recently we congratulated ourselves for electing an African-American president. Today, we are trying to erase his legacy. This is a recurring pattern. Every step forward in race relations is followed by two steps back. Emancipation was followed by sharecropping, debt peonage, and convict leasing. African-American citizenship was followed by Jim Crow and lynching.

African-American voting rights were followed by literacy tests, the poll tax, fraud, terror, and today’s new voter suppression techniques. Brown v. Board of Education was followed by massive resistance, white riots, and whites-only private academies. Obama’s election was followed by “You lie,” birtherism, and now – this. This pattern of white backlash prevents America from moving forward and becoming whole.

Until we confront this ugly history, we will stay stuck in this dismal rut.
