Brandon Klotter was sleeping on June 13 when he heard calls of distress from fellow scout Max Kramer, who was pinned under a tree that had fallen on their tent at Camp Michaels in Union, Kentucky.

“I'm not going to lie,” the 14-year-old told WCPO. “I was pretty scared.”

Klotter ran barefoot for a quarter-mile in the dark and rain to find help for Kramer. Emergency crews helped free the boy, who suffered two broken ribs, a lacerated lung and a shattered spleen, WCPO reported.

“I felt there was a lot of little things that happened that kind of came together in the end and made it a miracle,” said Kramer, who pinned the medal on Klotter. “I’m really excited for (Klotter). I just feel like he really does deserve (the medal).”

Klotter downplayed his role.

"I feel like in this case, anyone could have done what I did if they were put into it," he said.
