DeKalb School District’s proposed Meritorious Attendance Program
Cost: $1 million for the year
The bonuses: for perfect attendance — $150; only one day absent — $100; two days absent — $75; three days absent — $50; more than four days absent — nothing
Who would be eligible? district bus drivers, food service, custodians, paraprofessionals (also known as teachers’ aides)
and clerical employees (about 3,500 employees).
Will it happen? This is subject to approval of the school board. It would be effective for the district’s 2014 fiscal year, which starts July 1.
What the district spends on substitutes for absent workers:
For assistant food service workers: $247,854 in fiscal 2011; $295,290 in fiscal 2012; $222,045 in fiscal 2013
For bus drivers: $214,301 in fiscal 2011; $90,721 in fiscal 2012; $545,796 in fiscal 2013
For clerical workers: $125,983 in fiscal 2011; $202,135 in fiscal 2012; $200,161 in fiscal 2013
For paraprofessionals: $155,959 for fiscal 2011; $161,764 for fiscal 2012; $279,637 for fiscal 2013
Total spent for subs in all four categories (food service, bus driver, clerical worker, paraprofessionals): $498,182 for fiscal 2011 (including summer paraprofessionals); $749,911 for fiscal 2012; $1,247,640 for fiscal 2013. Data on custodians not available.
