Erie smashes snowfall record with flakes still falling


UPDATE @ 1:10 p.m. (Dec. 27)

Erie, Pa. has now received over 63-inches of snow since Christmas Eve, adding to an already historic total.

Just on Christmas Day alone, the city received 34-inches of snow, shattering the previous record of 20-inches in a 24-hour period, set in 1956, according to the National Weather Service..

Wednesday morning, the Erie International Airport received 1.3-inches of snow, setting the three-day storm total to 63.8-inches, the NWS said.

The monthly total for Erie, Pa. has now reached 97-inches, 30-inches more than the previous highest total on record, 66.9-inches, set in December 1989.

Yesterday, the National Weather Service said a 30-hour total of snowfall in Erie, Pa. surpassed the total amount of snow Dayton received in 2015, 2016, and 2017 combined.

Snow continues to fall in Erie, Pennsylvania, and surrounding areas that already have seen a record amount of snow over the past few days.

The National Weather Service office in Cleveland says at least an additional 5 to 10 inches are expected through Wednesday.

The storm brought 34 inches of snow on Christmas Day, an all-time daily snowfall record for Erie.

Another 24.5 inches fell by Tuesday night, bringing the total since Dec. 23 to more than 62.9 inches.

WEATHER: Power outages reported in the area

Erie has issued a snow emergency, citing "dangerous and impassable" roads. It's asking residents to stay off streets until the snow stops and roads can reopen.

State police and the state Department of Transportation are urging people to avoid travel, citing poor visibility and deteriorating conditions.
