For the 125th year, Marietta City Schools students are coming back to class. And this time it’ll be with a new superintendent.

The first day of school in Marietta those many years ago was Sept. 5, 1892 — compare that to this year’s start date of Aug. 3.

Back then, there were 733 students, according to the district. Now there are more than 8,900 students enrolled in the school system.

The district’s first superintendent was Joseph F. Stewart, and this year, his present-day successor Grant Rivera, will see his first day of classes as the school system’s chief.

Learn more about Rivera and what else is going on in the district below.
