Students shake off their nap under the direction of lead teacher James Hollifield and teachers Natunya Brown and Carletta Johnson. Georgia's popular, lottery funded pre-kindergarten program is paying off for 4-year-olds, giving them a leg-up on counting and six other skills they need for school, according to a study released on Wednesday. Researchers at UNC Chapel Hill's Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute found students who completed Georgia pre-k and were headed to kindergarten performed better on seven of 10 school readiness skills than students of the same age who were just entering the program.
