Someone ran into the metal beam protecting the Concord Road Bridge on Feb. 21. It spans Nickajack Creek and just underwent an $800,000 renovation.

The Concord Road Bridge can’t catch a break.

About three weeks after the last whack, a vehicle hit the metal that protects the historic bridge, the county department of transportation tweeted Wednesday.

This is the third time the bridge has been hit since it re-opened after an $800,000 renovation a couple months ago, Cobb County spokesman Ross Cavitt tweeted.

Cavitt said that Cobb police are looking for the driver of the white van that hit the metal beam protecting the bridge. He didn’t say if the driver would face charges nor what types if found.

Workers in 2009 installed the beams, which look like a giant staple at the entrance of the bridge, to warn drivers of the seven-foot height limit, but the county reports that the bridge still gets hit about once a month.

This comes after the historic covered bridge near Smyrna was renovated last fall, to the tune of $802,959 in SPLOST, or Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, funds. It was closed for four months.

The bridge had been starting to lean after 145 years of taking traffic across Nickajack Creek. The structure entered the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
