Police in Alpharetta are searching for a man who stole 63 cartons of cigarettes from a Kroger last week.

The man was seen on surveillance footage wearing a black hat, long black coat and khaki pants.

According to a police report, each carton is valued at $56 or more, which would be a total loss of about $3,528 for the Kroger off Windward Parkway and Highway 9.

Police were called to the scene at 4 p.m. on Jan. 16 and met with the store’s manager, who had noticed that “a significant amount” of cigarettes were missing from the store’s inventory. It was determined, by looking at surveillance footage, that they were stolen around 2 a.m. that morning.

The store was closed, but employees were present working after-hours shifts. The suspect entered the store by using his hands to push the automatic doors open, police said. He then walked to the front of the store near the registers and had a “brief conversation” with an employee, police said.

According to the surveillance footage, the suspect walked back toward the door, but then “ducked down” and made his way to the register with the cigarettes. He then grabbed a mixture of Marlboro, Salem, Kool and Newport cartons and stuffed them in a large trash bag, police said.

The suspect then fled the store and got into a black four-door sedan. Police could not identify the make and model of the car. Police said there were no visible fingerprints near the area of the theft.
