Photos: The legacy of Marietta's McNeel Marble Company
1 / 14
The McNeel Marble Company of Marietta, founded in 1892, became the South's largest manufacturer of Confederate monuments. The company started when brothers Morgan Louis McNeel and R.M. McNeel bought an existing marble plant on Whitlock Avenue across the street from today's Gone With the Wind Museum. This photo is from 1892 and shows the workers at the company's first plant. The company ceased operations in the mid-1960s. (Courtesy, Georgia Archives, Vanishing Georgia Collection, cob197 / Used with permission)
