A 55-year-old man was killed after a tree smashed through his home in Sandy Springs, authorities said.

The Sandy Springs man who was killed Monday after a tree landed on his home has been identified.

According to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office, the man’s name is Stanley Williams. He was 59.

Sandy Springs' mayor, Rusty Paul, said Williams died when a tree sliced through his home on Hardeman Road, landing on Williams while he was in bed. Police said he was killed instantly.

Channel 2 Action News spoke to the man who heard the tree fall on Williams' home.

“I heard it cracking, and you know when a large tree is breaking. You can tell very quickly,” Don David, who lived behind Williams, told Channel 2. “I tried to get in the back (of the house) and the door was sort of jammed. … It’s hard because I wish I could’ve done something, (but) if I would’ve gone in, it would’ve been incredibly stupid because the tree continued to fall.”

Other neighbors told Channel 2 that Williams was an architect who lived alone and was “very friendly” and mostly kept to himself.

Williams is one of two fatalities in Georgia that are being blamed on Tropical Storm Irma, according to the Associated Press. The other person who was killed by Irma was Nancy EasonThe 67-year-old retired court reporter and wife of a former Cumming police chief died when a tree fell on her car in Forsyth County.
