A buildup of paper and debris caused a 5,629-gallon sewage spill in Gwinnett County on Monday.

The spill on Sterling Drive in Lawrenceville was reported to the Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources at 2:31 p.m. Monday. Crews were able to stop the spill by 6:40 p.m.

The cause of the spill was determined to be paper, wipes and other products. Some sewage entered a tributary of Little Suwanee Creek, the department said.

The department raked the area and spread lime in order to mitigate the effects of the spill. Signs were posted to alert residents to the spill and the Georgia Environmental Protection Division was notified. Exposure to raw sewage generally poses the risk of diseases and infections including gastro-enteritis and E. coli.
