Channel 2's Nicole Carr reports.

DeKalb County crews were still at work Friday morning to try to contain a spill that has already sent thousands of gallons of sewage into a creek in the Lithonia area.

The spill, which was reported Wednesday night, was found by Department of Watershed Management workers on a creek crossing near the Snapfinger Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Residents had noticed the smell from the spill in Snapfinger Creek near Flat Shoals Parkway before workers arrived, Channel 2 Action News reported.

“When you crossed the bridge,” Brenda Burgess told the news station, “there was that significant smell there.”

Drinking water is not affected, officials said Thursday in a news release. Residents are warned to avoid the spill site and keep pets away from the water until further notice.

The cause of the spill is under investigation.
