The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday announced an investigation into the death of an inmate, who was a lawyer recently suspended from the state bar.

Ali F. Morad, 51, of Brookhaven, died Friday at DeKalb Medical Center after a “medical emergency” at the jail off Memorial Drive, according to a news release.

Morad, who ran his own firm, had been in jail since May 10 on an aggravated stalking charge.

Warrants say he’s accused of violating a protective order barring him from contacting a family member. The family member couldn’t be reached for comment immediately Thursday.

According to bar records, Morad, an Emory University graduate, was suspended from practicing law in April for failing to "adequately" respond to a disciplinary investigation. Details of the investigation weren't immediately available.

Morad received assistance at the jail’s main medical unit before being transported to the DeKalb Medical Center, the sheriff’s office said, adding that the county medical examiner’s office hasn’t released a cause of death.

The sheriff’s office said it would make no comment on the case and declined to release any reports related to the death until its investigation is completed.
