Gwinnett students’ ACT scores higher than state, national averages

Gwinnett County students earned a higher average score on their ACT exam than students in the rest of Georgia and the United States, the county school district said.

The district average was a 22.6 out of a possible 36, Gwinnett County Public Schools said. The state average was 21.4 and the national average was 21.0, putting the 4,953 Gwinnett County students who took the test in the past year an average of more than a point ahead.

Eight Gwinnett County schools improved their average on the exam between the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 school years. Those schools are Central Gwinnett High School; Collins Hill High School; Discovery High School; Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology; Lanier High School; Mill Creek High School; Shiloh High School; and South Gwinnett High School.

The ACT is a standardized college admissions exam that evaluates skills in reading, writing, mathematics and science. It is often taken instead of or in conjunction with the SAT.
