The requirements to be a substitute teacher are not as strict as those for a full-time teacher. You do not have to be certified to teach, but you must have 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours from a college approved by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission, the group that certifies teachers in the Peach State. Those who do not have a valid or expired teaching certificate must complete the Gwinnett County Public Schools Substitute Teacher Training Program.

Substitute teachers can earn $89 per day, or $99 per day if they are serving in a long-term capacity.
