Gwinnett County Commissioners will soon have a chance to approve plans to widen the Pleasant Hill Road bridges to six lanes over the Chattahoochee River.
Gwinnett is already widening Pleasant Hill Road from McClure Bridge Road to the river. Johns Creek is widening the four-lane stretch from the river to Medlock Bridge Road.
Johns Creek and Gwinnett have agreed to an Intergovernmental Agreement to split costs for the pedestrian improvements required to cross the river. According to Chris Haggard, Deputy Director – Transportation for Johns Creek, “The existing bridge westbound can be restriped to three lanes as long as we separate pedestrians on a bridge and the existing bridge eastbound can be restriped to three lanes with a sidewalk on the existing bridge.”
“We are going to be able to use the existing bridges to widen the road to six lanes, but we have to remove the sidewalk for the bridge to do so,” Gwinnett County Transportation Director Alan Chapman said. “The separate new pedestrian bridge will restore that movement.”
The pedestrian improvements are expected to cost about $1.5 million and be shared equally between Johns Creek and Gwinnett using a combination of SPLOST and Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank grant funds.
