Firefighters work to extinguish a fire that originated in the attic of a two-story house in Gwinnett County.

A two-story home near Lawrenceville was damaged in a fire Thursday morning.

Investigators believe the fire started in the attic of the home.

While the exact cause of the fire is undetermined, investigators are not ruling out a potential electrical source as a contributing factor, said Captain Tommy Rutledge, spokesperson for Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

The residents, three adults and one child, were not home at the time of the fire. A neighbor called 911 to report flames coming from the house. Firefighters found heavy flames and smoke coming from the attic.

The American Red Cross is working to settle the family following damage to the attic from the fire and smoke as well as water damage to the second floor.
