Two dogs were found dead when fire damaged a Gwinnett County house early Wednesday, a fire department spokesman said.

The resident made it out unharmed, and horses at a stable on the property were not injured.

Crews responded about 5:45 a.m. to the 600 block of Riverside Road in Buford, said Justin Wilson of Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services. Heavy flames were coming from the porch of the two-story residence, which was well off the road with a steep driveway, Wilson said.

Firefighters knocked down most of the fire on the porch and put out the blaze after it spread to the roof.

“Additional crews completed a search of the home and located two deceased dogs,” Wilson said.

“The property is also home to a private horse stable known as Brookmore Farm. There were no stables involved or injuries to horses at the location.”

The occupant told firefighters she woke up to the sound of the smoke alarm. She called 911 after finding the fire on the front porch.

The fire has been ruled accidental, according to Wilson. It started near an outlet on the front porch due to an electrical fault.
