Deputy shot responding to domestic dispute in Forsyth County, suspect kills self

A Forsyth County deputy was shot responding to a domestic dispute, and the suspect took his own life, officials say.

The shooting happened on Hickory Hills Road and surrounding homes in the neighborhood were evacuated, Forsyth County Sheriff Ron Freeman said.

Deputies believed the man responsible for the shooting holed up nearby and all residents had been asked to stay indoors until the situation was resolved.

Deputies had been attempting to get him to come outside to talk “when they came under significant gunfire from the residence,” and deputies returned gunfire, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s office.

The wounded deputy, whose name was not released, was taken to a hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries, Freeman said. He suffered gunshot wounds to his legs, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s office SWAT team was on the scene attempting to negotiate, with assistance from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s office SWAT team, members of North Fulton’s SWAT team, Georgia State Patrol officers and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

However, the Forsyth County Sheriff’s office posted an update at 8:20 p.m. Sunday evening saying that after attempted negotiations, the suspect took his own life.

No additional people were injured, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the crime scene investigation.
