A DeKalb County police officer was leaving the scene of a stabbing that left a man dead Wednesday but then noticed footprints in the snow.

The tracks, a rare investigative tool in the Atlanta area, led a few hundred feet to a shed on Brannen Road off I-20 in the Gresham Park area. Inside, the officer found 38-year-old Sasha McCalop with blood on her, according to a police report.

The officer detained McCalop for questioning around 8 a.m.

“She is claiming that there was a physical confrontation between the two and sometime during the struggle, she stabbed him,” department spokeswoman Shiera Campbell said Thursday.

Detectives charged her with murder.

Further details, including the connection between the victim and suspect, haven’t been released. The man was found dead at a home on Welland Avenue. The victim’s name is being withheld because his family hasn’t been notified of his death.

McCalop remained in the county jail Thursday.
