Cherokee County will seek a $30,000 federal grant to implement an adaptive sports program for disabled veterans.

The county Board of Commissioners authorized staff to apply for the grant from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, after Cherokee Parks and Recreation Agency staff met with the director of the Cherokee Homeless Veterans Program on increasing the therapeutic programs offered by the county.

Parks and Recreation plans to implement four programs in the first year of the program: archery, swimming, bowling and 16-inch softball, according to the agenda packet for a recent Board of Commissioners meeting. The grant requires no local match.

Cherokee County has the seventh-largest veterans population in Georgia, estimated at more than 15,000, staff said. It is unknown how many may be disabled.
