Eligible Cherokee County students could register to vote at school and county elections officials would assist with programs such as mock elections, under a partnership agreement between the schools and county elections board.

The Cherokee school board recently approved the agreement with the county Board of Elections and Registration

Citing state law that names high school principals deputy registrars for voter registration, the agreement says that every April, every high school administration will arrange to let eligible students register to vote at school. The district also would facilitate the use of schools as polling places (currently, 17 school sites are used).

Under the agreement, the elections board would communicate with a district official regarding use of school sites on election days, assist with educational programs, and provide voter registration materials and guest speakers upon request.
