The Cherokee County School District has launched its annual Child Find initiative to identify children and youth eligible for free, appropriate, special education services.

The program seeks young people suspected of having, or have been diagnosed as having, a disability or developmental delay. The referral process must be initiated by the child’s parent, and can be started by calling the school district at 770 479-1784.

A child should be referred when a child has a health or medical disorder that interferes with development and/or learning; difficulty seeing or hearing; or social, emotional or behavioral difficulties that affect the ability to learn, officials said.

Also, a diagnosed progressive or degenerative condition that will eventually impair or impede learning, difficulty understanding directions, unlike others their age, speech that is not understandable to family or friends or difficulty with reading, math or other school subjects.

The district serves children ages 3 through 21.
