Atlanta’s close-knit community of brewers and beer lovers is mourning the death of one of their own.
Dan Rosen, 58, the co-founder of MAZURT Brewing Company, was killed early Tuesday in an apparent hit-and-run incident in DeKalb County, police said.
Word spread quickly among those who knew Rosen, said Scott Hedeen of Burnt Hickory Brewery in Kennesaw.
“Beloved” is how Hedeen described Rosen. “My Facebook (page) lit up and my phone lit up with interest” when word of Rosen’s death got out.
Rosen was a major player in metro Atlanta’s craft beer scene for a decade, Hedeen said.
MAZURT is described as a startup home-brew operation by Bob Townsend, who writes about the beer scene for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The beer was not a commercial operation and was only available at events.
MAZURT is “currently seeking investors for our brewery in development,” according to its website.
Its signature beer was described as an “imperial stout” by Hedeen.
Before his involvement with beer brewing, Rosen was a cameraman for a television station. That’s how Hedeen met him.
Rosen also was a big fan of the Atlanta Braves and followed mixed martial arts.
As for the fatal incident, DeKalb police said Thursday they are investigating but have no new information, spokeswoman Shiera Campbell said. There were no witnesses at the scene.
But Rosen’s memory will live on, including at a gathering in his honor at Burnt Hickory on Thursday evening.
“You would say MAZURT,” Hedeen said, “and people would get excited.”
