The Atlanta branch of Susan G. Komen has been chosen as one of four affiliates to introduce a new name and approach to the annual Race for the Cure.
This year’s event, to be held May 5 at Lenox Square Mall, will be called the More Than Pink Walk. One difference participants will notice is that the route has been slightly shortened from the usual 5K race to a 2.25-mile walk.
True to the new name, colors other than pink will be portrayed in an effort to symbolize aspects of the group’s mission. Purple, green, blue and orange represent research, care, community and action, respectively.
The event will begin with a short ceremony that will include speeches by three local men or women who have been impacted by breast cancer. It will also include a special recognition for all breast cancer survivors.

Cati Diamond Stone, Komen Atlanta executive director, said in a statement that the race "will inspire the metro Atlanta community to want to do more."
The annual race event has been the organization’s largest fundraiser since 1991. Funds raised by the More Than Pink Walk will provide breast health and breast cancer services for those who cannot afford them and will fund research to find cures.
This is the second year in a row the race has undergone changes. In April, Komen Atlanta made the unprecedented decision to postpone the race due to complications from the I-85 bridge collapse.
