Several employees at the Atlanta Humane Society will be deployed to Houston to assist the city in Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.

A team from Atlanta will head to Houston on Sept. 5.

In advance of that, the Humane Society is asking for donations to help support the team. Those who donated on Aug. 30 or 31 had their gift doubled by a group of major donors, which will help the disaster relief team and animals affected by the storm in the Southeast.

The team heading to Houston will not be bringing animals back with them. Instead, the team will be assisting in the field with immediate animal welfare needs in Houston.

This includes assisting in the intake and care of stray, lost or abandoned animals at the Houston SPCA.

Last week, the Atlanta Humane Society took in 30 adoptable pets from the Louisiana SPCA to create more space for pets displaced by Hurricane Harvey. Those pets were transferred to the Mansell Campus in Alpharetta.

In effort to create more space at Atlanta shelters, the Atlanta Humane Society has waived all adoption fees through the end of August.
