Alpharetta councilman announces run for mayor

Jim Gilvin, who has served on Alpharetta's city council since 2011, has announced a run for mayor.

Jim Gilvin, who has served on Alpharetta's city council since 2011, has announced a run for mayor.

Alpharetta will hold a special election later this year when mayor David Belle Isle leaves his seat to run for Secretary of State for Georgia.

And at least one current city council member will look to succeed him.

Jim Gilvin, the city’s Post 4 councilman, has announced he will run for mayor. Gilvin serves as the council’s liaison to public safety and has been on the council since 2011.

"Serving the people of this community for the last six years on Alpharetta City Council has been the greatest honor of my life," Gilvin wrote on his campaign website.

Gilvin announced his candidacy on Dec. 28 by posting a statement on the website.

“I appreciate the dedication and energy Mayor Belle Isle brought to his time as mayor. Our city has come a long way and Alpharetta is a much different place because of his leadership,” he said. “And as the people of Alpharetta begin looking to the future it’s important for them to know there is a candidate with a proven record of public service who will deliver on their priorities for the years ahead.”

Gilvin’s current term isn’t set to expire until December 2019, so if he qualifies for the race, the city will have to hold a special election to fill his seat.

A native of Macon, Gilvin moved to Alpharetta in 1998, according to the city's website. He is married with two children and works as a residential real estate agent. He holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Georgia Southern University.

Gilvin said in a statement that his top priority will be to “ensure policies reflect balanced growth outlined in Alpharetta’s comprehensive plan.”

A date for the likely special election in Alpharetta has not been set. Qualifying for the office of Georgia Secretary of State is March 5-9.
