1,800 DeKalb school kids just got free books

For more than 25 years, the Rotary Club of Dunwoody has given every child at Dresden Elementary a new, personalized book in December, and this year Kingsley Elementary was added to the tradition.

Tucked inside the books were cards with English translations for words commonly used in Spanish, which is the language most spoken by the Dresden community.

There were a total of 1,800 books given between the two DeKalb County schools, the rotary club said.

Rotary got together to insert the cards and place the nameplate stickers inside the covers. School media specialists had chosen the books for each grade level.

In response to the gift, each student traditionally writes a thank-you note that appears on a table at the Annual Holiday Luncheon at the Dunwoody Country Club in December. The Dresden choir also performs.

The project was conceived and led by Dunwoody resident Roy Ethridge. Last year, the reins were passed to fellow local Jack Sparks.
