Metro Atlanta city considers jailing parents for kid’s crimes

It's been proposed for South Fulton County.

A South Fulton councilwoman is proposing legislation that could send parents to jail if their kids break the law, Channel 2 Action News is reporting.

The proposal, by Councilwoman Helen Willis, could put parents in jail for up to 30 days — and fine them $100 — if they don't properly supervise their unruly, minor children.

“You brought the child into the world, you should be responsible for your child,” Willis told Channel 2.

But the proposal is controversial. Activist Marcus Coleman told Channel 2 he doesn’t think the issue should go through the city’s court system. Instead, community organizations should be able to help parents.

The draft ordinance has not yet been introduced. Residents will have a chance to comment on the proposal at a town hall meeting Monday night.
