Atlanta paid $8 million back in 2005 for professional city "branding" -- essentially paying for an ad campaign boosting the city's profile locally and nationally. But for decades, Gwinnett County got it right (and for much less than $8 million) when they simply painted "Gwinnett Is Great" and "Success Lives Here" on two prominent water towers along I-85. Erected in 1968 and 1972, the original towers advertised Gwinnett to hundreds of thousands of travelers. The slogans exemplified the brash confidence of power brokers, but the towers also became sentimental landmarks for generations of residents who passed them on their commutes. They were demolished in 2010, but some in the county are floating the idea of rebuilding them. Cost of the last paint job on the towers? $183,000. Quite a far cry from $8 million. -- Text by David Wickert, AJC; Photo gallery and some text by Mandi Albright, AJC
