The Georgia Department of Transportation says it's ready for the winter storm that's set to sweep across North Georgia today.

GDOT spokeswoman Natalie Dale said all state routes have been brined in anticipation of the mix of snow and rain. She said road temperatures are still above freezing, but as the wintry mix arrives the temperatures will keep dropping.

“We will continue to watch and work with our partners at National Weather Service throughout the day to determine next steps and what areas need the most man power,” Dale said early Friday.

GDOT officials say they have improved their ability to keep highways open during inclement weather. The agency recently added an 11th brine tanker to its fleet in metro Atlanta. The extra vehicle is used to apply brine at key highway interchanges - which are often elevated - and to the Downtown Connector. It has also doubled its brine storage capacity statewide.

mix of rain and snow is possible today, with up to 3 inches of accumulation possible in some areas.
