Cobb County Police officers may be getting a new chief soon.

Cobb will likely get a new police chief next month, with the county commission scheduled to vote June 13 on whether to appoint current Clayton County Police Chief Mike Register to lead the Cobb County department.

Register previously spent nearly 20 years on the Cobb force, according to a statement released by the county Monday.

“Chief Register will be an excellent leader for our outstanding men and women in uniform,” Public Safety Director Sam Heaton was quoted saying. “He is a decorated officer, veteran and brings a wealth of education, knowledge and expertise, including almost 20 years with the Cobb County Police Department.”

If approved, Register's compensation will be $139,000. Interim Police Chief Tim Cox is making $135,471. His predecessor, Police Chief John Houser, now retired, received an ending salary of $134,751.
