Atlanta Police Chief Turner to retire

Atlanta Police Chief George Turner is retiring as the city’s top cop, Mayor Kasim Reed’s office confirmed Wednesday.

“Since his appointment as Police Chief six years ago, George Turner has served as a vital member of my cabinet,” Reed said in a statement.

“Under his leadership, we have made significant progress toward our goal of making Atlanta one of the safest large cities in America,” Reed said. “As he prepares to embark on the next chapter of his career, I want to extend my best wishes and deep appreciation for his unwavering commitment to the residents of Atlanta.”

The mayor expects to announce a replacement at a press conference on Thursday.

Channel 2 Action News broke the news that Turner was expected to step down early Wednesday. The mayor’s office at the time declined Wednesday to comment and a spokeswoman for the Atlanta Police Department referred questions to the mayor’s office.

Turner was named the city’s police chief in 2010 and is a 35-year veteran of the department.

Vermont Sen.
