Are Democrats poised to gain ground in Gwinnett?

As The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports, Gwinnett County politics has been dominated by Republicans for more than a generation. But as the county's minority population booms, Democrats think their chances of winning public office are on the rise. Some experts also believe that, sooner rather than later, Gwinnett will swing from red to blue.

One measure of the change: Gwinnett’s presidential election vote. Here’s a look at how the county voted in the last four presidential elections:

2000 George. W. Bush 63.6%, Al Gore: 32.1%

2004 George W. Bush: 65.7%, John Kerry: 33.4%

2008 John McCain: 54.6%, Barack Obama: 44.4%

2012 Mitt Romney: 53.8%, Barack Obama: 44.6%

In short, Republicans still have a significant edge over Democrats, using voting in presidential elections as the yardstick. But that edge is getting smaller, and one political scientist told the AJC that Gwinnett could swing Democratic as soon as 2020.
