Founded October 13, 1885, for the purpose of, as the Today In Georgia History website terms it, "bring[ing] the Industrial Revolution to Georgia," the Georgia Institute of Technology started out small. With only 84 students and $65,000 in state funding, Georgia Tech at first focused on mechanical engineering. But over the years, Tech became the noted research institution that we know today. Here's a look back at some of the cool experiments that Tech scientists have worked on over at the North Avenue campus. In this 1959 photo, Edgar Manseau (left) and Dr. William F. Atchison inspect a language project on the Datatron 220 computer's line printer. (Looks like they're having more success than many of us have with our own printers.)
