Atlanta teacher asks for help bringing yoga to the classroom

Even as Cobb County parents are upset over their school’s yoga program because they thought it endorsed a “non-Christian belief system,” an Atlanta teacher is asking for help to bring yoga to her students.

“Our students live in an economically depressed area and don’t have access to meditation workshops or yoga classes,” media specialist Shanna Miles wrote on the crowd funding website DonorsChoose.org, where she requested donations to buy yoga mats and other supplies for South Atlanta High School.

“They are essentially classed out of these useful tools for life management, but by providing these materials we can close the emotional learning gap. Through yoga and meditation we can give students tools to combat stress and negativity while also building confidence and self-awareness.”
