The Atlanta City Council agreed Monday to transfer deeds to 31 properties to Atlanta Public Schools.
The action helps fulfill a campaign promise made by Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms to turn over to APS deeds to school properties held by the city, a leftover from before the city and school district became separate legal entities in the 1970s.
Control of the properties has been the source of a dispute between the city and school district. APS officials want the flexibility to sell, trade, or use the properties in other ways. An additional 21 properties not included in Monday's council vote are still held by the city, which is working through legal reviews and drawing boundary lines before turning those over to the district.
Councilmember Michael Julian Bond cast the lone no vote Monday against the transfer of 31 properties. The legislation now awaits the mayor’s signature.
