Hapeville City Councilwoman Ruth Barr talks with officers on Aug. 4, 2016, outside City Hall at the city’s night out on crime event. Revenue agents charged Barr with perjury and served an injunction this week that orders her and her firm, B & B Accounting and Tax Service, to stop preparing tax returns.

The arrest by state revenue agents was carried out a day after the agency served an injunction ordering her and her daughter, Anne Barr Cruz, to cease their tax preparation business. The business, B & B Accounting and Tax Services, has been under investigation since last spring following an AJC/Channel 2 Action News investigation that revealed a long trail of victims who say Ruth Barr stole their money or prepared bad tax returns that led to audits.

The state has identified close to 8,000 tax returns that may be suspicious and estimates the lost tax revenue connected to Barr’s business at more than $6 million.
