An 11-year-old girl was injured when a gun went off as she looked for a cellphone charger in her aunt’s car, Atlanta police said.

Officers responded to the accidental shooting about 11:20 p.m. Thursday in the 1700 block of Stanton Road, according to police.

The victim had a single gunshot wound to her left hand, Officer Stephanie Brown said.

The gun discharged when the girl was digging through the center console of her aunt’s car, police said.

“The gun belonged to the aunt’s boyfriend and was not stolen,” Brown said.

The aunt, who has not been identified, told police she did not know the gun was in the car.

The girl was taken to the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, where her mother met her.
