Escaped Georgia inmate captured

Christopher Carroll escaped from jail on Wednesday.

He stole a county van and drove to South Carolina, officials said.

Carroll was arrested Saturday.

An inmate who escaped from a jail in Middle Georgia this week was captured Saturday, officials said.

Christopher Nicholas Carroll was taken into custody in North Augusta, S.C., and is at the Aiken County Detention Center, public safety officers announced.

Carroll escaped Tuesday from the Lamar County jail, Sheriff Brad White said.

Investigators think Carroll escaped after he used a metal rod from the shower to knock out part of a wall, which he then shimmied through to escape the jail. Once outside, he escaped through a hole in a chain fence.

White said the jailers heard some banging and he believes that was Carroll's cellmate clanking the doors for a specific reason.

"We really believe that the inmate that was in the cell with him was masking the sound," he said.

He stole a county truck when he escaped. The truck was found in Allendale County, S.C.

White told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Carroll stole a truck from Bamberg County earlier Friday morning.

Carroll was scheduled to head to prison Thursday on obstruction and theft charges. The sheriff said he learned South Carolina wanted to try him on charges there.

"I think he found out they were going to extradite him and he wasn't too happy about that," White said.
