A worker at an Alpharetta assisted living facility funded a spending spree with thousands of dollars of a resident’s money, according to Channel 2 Action News.
Police think the worker took checks from the resident’s room in December at Addington Place of Alpharetta, then cashed them.
“We noticed that four (checks) had just been torn out, and when I got copies of the checks I noticed that this young lady had signed my mother-in-law's name, which wasn't even close to her signature,” said the victim’s daughter-in-law, who asked that her name not be used.
Among the things that the suspect, Ashley Simon, allegedly used the money for: pageant entry fees for a child.
"I was upset,” the daughter-in-law said. “I felt like she'd been taken advantage of."
The woman called her mother-in-law and said, “‘Do you know this person and do you know why you wrote a check to her?’ She said, ‘I have no idea who that person is.’”
Management of the facility confirmed Simon worked there, Channel 2 reported. They said she was fired in December, and current management took over this month.
"This individual was eventually tracked down and we were able to make an arrest," Officer Jason Muenzer of Alpharetta police said.
Simon was charged with burglary and check fraud, police said.
“You always want to make sure, that even though it's their home, still lock up their valuables,” Muenzer said. “Hide checkbooks, have them stay with family.”
