As temperatures cool, many homeowners bring out the wreaths and harvest decor, but for some Atlanta area communities, it’s time to bring their A-game.
Fall home tours are a tradition that allow people to see what local neighborhoods have to offer both in community spirit, architecture and personal style.
Here’s a look at two upcoming tours of intown neighborhoods with their own unique character.
Castleberry Hill Loft Tour
When: 11 a.m.-5 p.m, Oct. 14
Cost: $20 in advance, $25 the week of the event, $30 day of

What you'll see: Eight to 12 residential lofts are expected to be featured on the tour, joining food trucks and artist installations in the Castleberry Hill neighborhood, located near the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The neighborhood, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and boasts art galleries, shops and restaurants, melds history, creativity and modernity. Each loft has its own style and feel because they are decorated and designed independently.
“These spaces truly belong to the residents who live here,” said Kim Singleton, tour chairwoman. “The most exciting thing about these spaces is they are all completely different and located in several different buildings throughout the historic neighborhood.”
For example, William McCandless and his wife, Ursula, turned the executive offices for Swift & Co. into their home. Their renovated loft, for example, now has a spiral staircase, a rooftop deck and two bathrooms.
“We had fun tearing down the orange walls and decorative glass partitions. We transformed the space into a huge living space and a bedroom — two rooms,” said William McCandless, a basketball agent who is president of Three Eye Sports.
One artistic highlight in the neighborhood during the one-day tour is “Breathing Tank,” an inflatable sculpture by Joseph Peragine that will be installed at the Marcia Wood Gallery, Singleton said. The piece, which is the size of a World War II Sherman tank, is set on a timer to “inhale” and “exhale” at regular intervals.
Candler Park Tour of Homes
When: Noon-6 p.m., Oct. 1
Cost: $25

What you'll see: An appreciation for art, education and sustainability is on display during the Candler Park Tour of Homes, part of the intown Atlanta community's Fall Fest. Featuring eight homes, many of which have gardens on view, the tour showcases the neighborhood's eclectic architecture, from Craftsman bungalows to dwellings with modern design touches.
In the past several years, Candler Park has come into its own, says Stephanie Andrews, an interior designer and owner of Balance Design Atlanta.
“A lot of homes are getting remodeled and added to, and people are really spending time and attention on their homes in the past three years like we haven’t seen before,” she said.
The collection includes a sustainable Mission-style home featuring flooring made from fallen backyard pecan trees, an edible garden and an outdoor pizza oven.
“In a lot of these homes there’s a very comfortable, yet livable vibe that comes out in a lot of different ways,” Andrews said.
