Learn to make Bellina Alimentari’s lady pea salad

From the menu … Bellina Alimentari, Ponce City Market, 675 Ponce de Leon Ave., Atlanta. 404-330-9933; bellina-alimentari.com

A friend and I recently went to the Ponce City Market for the first time. As a native Atlantan, with an aunt and uncle that had careers with Sears at that location and having memories of shopping there with my family, it was great being back in that building again. We enjoyed a wonderful lunch at Bellina Alimentari where I had their Lady Pea Salad. It was amazing and I’d love to be able to prepare it for family and friends. Thanks for considering my request.— Carol O. Ball, Dunwoody

For those who grew up at a time when field peas were only served hot and cooked with pork, this recipe may come as a surprise. But lady peas, and other field peas, make a lovely cold salad as well. We offer you the recipe for a batch one-eighth the size of that made at the restaurant. It’s one of the rotating seasonal salads you’ll find at Bellina Alimentari.

Have you tried the Whole Foods sandwich that went viral?

Anyone can get their hands on the latest buzzy food craze: You just walk up to the deli at a Whole Foods, tell them you want “that TTLA sandwich” and pay $8 at the cash register.  That is, unless the deli is out of the ingredients, particularly the vegan tempeh “bacon” strips that are stuffed into the sandwich. Between...

Superb fish recipes for Lent (and the rest of the year)

For Christians, Lent is a time for quiet reflection. For austerity. For repentance.   But mostly it’s a time for fish.   Catholics and members of some other denominations choose to eat fish instead of meat on Ash Wednesday and every Friday until Easter. (For the Orthodox denominations, Great Lent began Monday; adherents generally...

Communal tables catch on at Minnesota restaurants

Minnesotans appear to be thawing out. In restaurants, anyway, where diners are slowly but surely embracing the communal dining table.   Dropping their chilly, arm’s-length practices, complete strangers are now willingly sitting next to one another — and testing the boundaries of their well-guarded personal space — as they...
